Biden Wants To Expand UN Security Council To Offset Russia

SOURCE– US President Joe Biden wants to expand UN Security Council to offset Russia and China by adding more members, including India, Brazil, Germany, South Africa, and Japan. The US National Security Council spokesman, John Kirby, said that Biden will ask the 193 UN member nations to take a look at the architecture of the Security Council as the UN General Assembly calls this week.

Currently, the UN Security Council has five permanent member states with veto powers, including Russia, China, the US, the UK, and France, and ten non-permanent members elected by the UN General Assembly for two-year terms. It is unclear if the new permanent members under US President Joe Biden’s proposal will enjoy the same veto powers as the current permanent members.

The annual call of the General Assembly draws dignitaries worldwide to New York, including a meeting between President Joe Biden and Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this year. President Joe Biden is expected to speak to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday, which is set to address the General Assembly in person for the first time since the Russian invasion of Ukraine started.
