Anthony Wiley, 34, of Richton Park, pleaded guilty Monday before Judge Randy Rosenbaum to theft over $500, confessing to stealing an emissions-control device from a car in the 2400 block of Chiswick Drive on Sept. 15, 2021.

In the recent published article by The News Gazette, thieves including Anthony Wiley want the converters because of the recyclable metals they contain.

Co-defendant Marquise Cooper, 24, of Chicago, pled guilty late last month to a lesser charge of misdemeanor criminal property damage for his role in the crime but received the same sentence.

Conditional release is a type of probation that does not need you to report to a probation officer on a regular basis.

Jonathan Wiley, 32, who last lived in Champaign, was a third defendant who failed to appear in court and had his bond forfeited to the county in July.

According to The News Gazette, the trio including Anthony Wiley were arrested after police saw two of them in the parking lot of an apartment complex working on removing a catalytic converter from a jacked-up Honda Pilot.

Anthony Wiley fled in a car in which a police officer assumed stolen catalytic converters were found, but when police found him and the car some hours later crashed on an Interstate 74 ramp, there were no converters inside.
