Alaska, the largest state in the United States by landmass, is the same size as Texas, Montana, and California combined. It was the penultimate state to join the Union, shortly before Hawaii, and was known as the Last Frontier State. Juneau, its capital, also serves as the state’s second largest city.
Its breathtaking natural beauty and extensive nature enthrall both residents and visitors. But despite of that, there are some most dangerous cities in Alaska that people should be aware of.
According to Southwest Journal, Anchorage is one of the most dangerous cities in Alaska with a violent crime rate at 11.40 per 1,000 population, that is 50% higher than the state average and nearly treble the national average.
Juneau is also one of the most dangerous cities in Alaska since its less safe districts include its downtown sections and Lemon Creek, which are notorious for having higher crime rates. Juneau’s violent crime rate of 8.69 per 1,000 residents is comparable to the state average. Property crime, on the other hand, is a more significant issue here, with rates around 25% higher than the rest of Alaska.
One of the most dangerous cities in Alaska is Bethel, known as the Alaska’s western jewel, in which it is nestled along the Kuskokwim River and has a population of 6,642 as of 2021. However, its crime statistics paint a less rosy picture. Bethel has one of the highest violent crime rates in the state, with 14.00 per 1,000 population, over double the state average. This is particularly impressive given the city’s tiny size. Bethel’s total crime rate exceeds the national average by more than 5%.

Before embarking on an outdoor trip, check the weather forecast to verify that no inclement weather is forecast for your destination, and keep in mind that the most of Alaska’s high crime areas are in larger cities and more major urban areas.
Fairbanks, Kodiak, Wasilla, North Pole, Kenai, Ketchikan, Sitka are also some of the most dangerous cities in Alaska that everyone should be aware of.
