Eritrean Soldiers’ Crimes

SOURCE– The Eritrean Defense Forces committed war crimes and possible crimes against humanity in Tigray, Ethiopia. The alleged crimes happened between October 2022 and January 2023 during an ongoing conflict between Tigrayan soldiers and the federal Ethiopian government and its allies- including the Eritrean Defense Forces, which left thousands dead since it started in 2020.

The 46-page report detailed the abuses, such as the rape and sexual enslavement of women who were subjected to physical and psychological abuse- deprivation of food, water, and medical services. In the Amnesty report released last Tuesday, a social worker said that there were 160 sexual violence cases reported in Kokob Tsibah between November 2020 and January 2023. A medical expert cited in the report said that their center handled 2,250 cases of conflict-related sexual violence from parts of the Eastern Tigray Zone- including Kokob Tsibah.

The victims said that they could identify the perpetrators through their uniforms- the Tigrinya dialect and the use of radical slurs. Amnesty International’s report also found evidence of the killings of 1 woman and 23 men in the Kokob Tsibah district between Nov. 2022 and Jan. 2023, aged between 40 and 90 years old. Because of the violence that happened many of the victim’s families were unable to bury their loved ones for long periods after their deaths. A woman told the Amnesty International, that her husband’s body remained at the place where he was killed for 3 months. Also, there were extrajudicial executions reported in the Mariam Shewito district- with more than 100 names of people. The victims were civilians- mostly farmers. The communities from Kokob Tsibah and Mariam Shewito changed their lives irreversibly through violations they experienced at the hands of the Eritrean Defense Forces (EDF).
