Back in the year 1962, a spacecraft named Mariner 2 achieved a remarkable milestone by successfully embarking on a journey to another planet. Today, Mariner 2 has turned 61 years old!
Mariner 2 Launches into Space
According to the article from Air and Space, Mariner 2 holds the distinction of being the first spacecraft to be launched into space and have a successful flight past Venus.
Mariner 2 was first launched on August 27, 1962, exactly 61 years today. The Mariner series included a pair of twins named Mariner 1 and Mariner 2, which were the first in the series. The first spacecraft, Mariner 1, was launched into space in July; however, it began veering uncomfortably near Cape Canaveral. Mariner 1 only lasted for about 5 minutes and was deemed unsuccessful.
Fortunately, Mariner 2 launched successfully just one month after Mariner 1’s failed launch. Mariner 2 was launched in August 1962 and flew towards its target: Venus.
Mariner 2 Achievements
The report claims that Mariner 2 has achieved measuring the solar wind streaming from the sun. Additionally, Mariner 2 also helped astronomers confirm the lead-melting temperature on the surface of Venus and revealed how different the planet is from Earth.
Despite the anomalies that Mariner 2 encountered upon its launch, the Mariner 2 mission performed its duty by having countless achievements as the first-ever aircraft to visit another planet.
