New SNAP Work Requirements
SOURCE– This coming September 1, 2023, the new SNAP requirements go into effect and require some older American citizens to work to be eligible for food assistance but the other groups are exempted from working. These new SNAP work requirements were authorized under the Fiscal Responsibility Act enacted on June 3. The new SNAP work requirements are part of the negotiations between President Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to raise the debt ceiling.
The latest requirements for SNAP are for those 18 to 49 years old who need to work or to attend job training for at least 80 hours a month. The Fiscal Responsibility Act has increased the age limit for work requirements for American citizens to qualify for the food assistance program.
- Starting September 1, 2023- American citizens’ age to meet work requirements increases to 50.
- Starting October 1, 2023- American citizens’ age to meet work requirements increases to 52.
- Starting October 1, 2023- American citizens’ age to meet work requirements increases to 54.
Also, they added new exemptions for work requirements for some American citizens who don’t need to submit proof of work are those veterans, homeless, and former foster children under the age of 25. These new SNAP work requirements will expire on October 1, 2030.
