Back to School Shopping: Parents Adapt to the Rising Cost of School Supplies Because of Inflation

Due to inflation and continued efforts to increase corporate profits, the 2023 back to school shopping list is stuffed with items with greater prices, including clothes for boys and girls, haircuts, pens, preschool and college tuition, and more.

Back to School Shopping School supplies Prices Increased

In an article published by Detroit Free Press, the back to school shopping Prices of school supplies have shockingly climbed by 23.7% over the last two years, making it even more important for many consumers to discover deals according to the latest Deloitte Back-to-School survey.

Inflation increased 3.2% year over year in July, according to the Labor Department. However, important back-to-school shopping items had some significant price increases.

Parents Adapt to Inflation Because of Back to School Shopping

An article published by Yahoo Finance, based on data from the Deloitte Back-to-School Survey, back to school shopping is often the second greatest spending occasion for parents each year, behind the holidays.

Clarey Collins has been steadily doing back to school shopping for her 12-year-old daughter Lila, who is heading to the seventh grade at Shrine Catholic Academy in Royal Oak.

According to Collins, “I definitely thought I was going to spend less than what I did. I thought we would be around $100 with this supply list that they provided, but we spent $175.”

Undoubtedly, she asserted, inflation played a role in some of those higher expenditures. She swiftly admits, though, that she and her daughter added a few items to their back-to-school shopping list.

Collins added, “We probably went above and beyond.”
