Dozens of local news organizations on Sunday condemned a police raid at the Marion County Record, sending a letter to the Kansas police department’s chief asking him to return all seized materials during Friday’s raid.

Friday’s Raid At The Marion County Record

The Marion County Record’s co-owner and publisher, Eric Meyer, believes Friday’s raid was prompted by sensitive information published about Kari Newell, the local business owner. Kansas police investigating identity theft and unlawful acts concerning computers, according to a search warrant.

During the raid computers, cellphones, and other materials were seized at the Marion County Record. During Friday’s raid, the Kansas police were allowed to seize including documents and records pertaining to Kari Newell that were listed on the search warrant. According to the source, Kari Newell told CNN the Marion County Record illegally used her credentials to get information that was available only to law enforcement and insurance agencies.

The letters sent by local news organizations to Marion Police Chief Gideon Cody were signed by 34 local news and press freedom organizations asking to return all seized materials during Friday’s raid. Chief Gideon Cody told CNN the rest of the story in this issue is available to the public. But, local news and press freedom organizations wanted to get back all seized materials.
