Tax-free Shopping in Missouri Malls
In a published article by Fox2 Now, tax-free applies to purchases of school supplies from Friday through Sunday. According to Sean Phillips, senior marketing director at the West County Center, “Everyone is going to need the shoes, backpacks, and clothing items.” The back-to-school shopping season begins with the tax-free holiday, offering people a chance to browse all the sales and save money.
Because the tax on purchases made at the mall is about 10%, Phillips added, “This is a great chance for everyone to save money.” Therefore, if you spend $2,000 on a computer, you will save paying $200 in taxes. The participating malls are those in West County, Mid Rivers, and South County.
The following qualifies:
- clothing with a taxable value of no more than $100.
- Purchases of school materials cannot exceed $50 each.
- software for computers with a taxable value of no more than $350.
- Computers for less than $1,500.
- other low-priced computer hardware, such as a mouse, keyboard, and external hard drive.
- Lastly, graphing calculators cost $150 or less

Back-to-School Supplies: Purchase them Tax-free
The Offline by Aerie store recently debuted and has proven to be a huge hit with teenagers seeking back-to-school supplies, according to Phillips. West County has a lot of stores to choose from on filling out your shopping list. Only 16 states in the nation—including Missouri—offer tax-free back-to-school shopping.
Every store in Kansas City and the rest of the state will participate in Missouri’s tax-free weekend, according to the Missouri Department of Revenue. After Senate Bill 153 was passed in 2021, local governments in the state can no longer choose to not collect the sales tax.
Online purchases of tax-exempt goods also count toward the tax-free weekend, according to the Department of Revenue. Items can be mailed to addresses in Missouri after the weekend, but the transaction has to be finished between August 4 and 6. The malls open at 10:00 a.m. to 8 p.m. and 11 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. to 6 p.m. last Sunday.
