How did Tourism Boost Navajo County’s Economy?

Newly published statistics from the Arizona Department of Tourism indicate that Navajo County has reaped substantial economic benefits from its thriving tourism sector over the last year.

A statistic showed in 2021, out-of-county visitors spent $246 million n Navajo City – a 31% increase from 2021 which was also a significant improvement over 2020. In 2022, the Arizona Department of Tourism says the visitors 2022 generated $980 per Navajo County household in tax revenue.

Last week, the Office of Tourism shared the latest statistics for 2022. According to the data, out-of-county visitors to Navajo County paid $37 million in taxes, a 22% increase from the previous year. The tourism industry also generated approximately $11 million in tax revenue, marking a 31% increase.

The figures show that the pandemic didn’t damage the tourism economy much. The 2019 tourist spending had climbed well above the 10-year average in Navajo County. The lockdowns and disruptions of the pandemic in 2019 knocked that figure down to just below the 10-year average in 2021. But the full recovery of the economy boosted tourist spending well above that average in 2021 and then upped it by another third in 2022.

In Navajo County, more than $426 million in direct spending supported about 4,000 local jobs in a county with about 110,000 residents, supporting nearly 8% of the civilian workforce jobs statewide and 10% of the employment. The Navajo County workforce has also been shrinking, but not as fast. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the county’s workforce peaked at about 44,790 in 2011 and has since declined to 40,000.

Finally, tourism plays a crucial role in bolstering the economy of Navajo County. The influx of visitors to this region significantly boosts local businesses and creates employment opportunities for the residents. The scenic beauty, cultural heritage, and natural wonders of Navajo County attract tourists worldwide, making it a popular destination for travelers seeking unique experiences. This thriving tourism sector is a testament to the county’s rich history, diverse culture, and stunning landscapes that continue to captivate and inspire visitors year after year.
