IRS Destroyed Around 30 Million Taxpayer Records

GOP lawmakers submitted a letter to Internal Revenue Service questioning why they destroyed around 30 million taxpayer documents over two years ago.

Reps. Jason Smith (R-MO), the chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, and Oversight Subcommittee Chairman David Schweikert, R-Ariz. had delivered a letter to IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel requesting him to comply with the documentation request that authorized the decision.

The Washington Examiner reported that when the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration report showed that the IRS destroyed about 30 million, the time letter came after the  “unprocessed, paper-filed information returns” in 2021.

Those documents might be important for some Taxpayers if their taxes were to be audited, which is likely given the Biden administration’s push for increased auditing in the last year.
