Authorities have apprehended a wounded Alamogordo police officer who was hospitalized on Sunday in a critical but stable condition.
Gunfight Between Suspect and Police Officer
In the early hours of the morning, police halted De La O. for failing to turn on his lights on Saturday. Police pursued him as he left the scene and crashed into a light pole at the intersection of Delaware Avenue and First Street. According to the press release, De La O allegedly discharged a sawed-off shotgun at least once, striking Officer Ferguson in the face. Then, a separate Alamogordo Police officer shot De La O in the leg, in a published report by AP News.
According to Susan Payne, Mayor of Alamogordo, Police Officer Anthony Ferguson was taken to a nearby hospital before being flown to UMC Hospital in El Paso. Officials from University Medical Center have confirmed that Officer Ferguson died on Sunday night.
De La O was being held at the Otero County jail, where he was charged with attempted first-degree murder of a police officer as well as other felonies, according to the New Mexico State Police. Inquiries are being conducted, according to the New Mexico State Police.
