Microsoft Corporation to Pay $14 Million Settlement in California Civil Rights Case Over Alleged Employee Leave Discrimination

According to the IBT, Microsoft Corporation has agreed to settle claims by the California Civil Rights Department by paying $14 million. The company was accused of unfairly penalizing employees who took medical or family-care leave since 2017, with a focus on women and those with disabilities. Allegations included instances where affected employees did not receive raises, promotions, or stock awards, and received lower performance ratings, impacting their career progression.

The settlement, which still needs court approval, ends a long investigation by the Civil Rights Department. Microsoft Corporation denies wrongdoing but plans changes. They will hire a consultant to ensure fair leave policies, improve complaint procedures, and train managers and HR staff. Most of the $14 million will go to affected workers, with each eligible employee getting at least $1,500 plus more based on their salary and how long they worked.
