Detectives recently arrested a nephew of an Altadena couple who were found shot to death in their home last month.
The District Attorney’s Office on Thursday, Jan. 9 charged Melvin Johnson with two counts of murder with the special-circumstance allegation of committing multiple murders. The 35-year-old Altadena man was also charged with the special allegation of discharging a firearm causing great bodily injury.
Detectives have not revealed the motive behind the shootings or released how they identified Johnson as the suspect in the killings of 62-year-old Wendell Harmon and 58-year-old Beverly Harmon.
He was arrested on Tuesday, Jan. 7, sheriff’s officials said.
A neighbor called authorities to do a welfare check on the Harmons. Deputies went to the couple’s house in the 700 block of West Sacramento Street in Altadena on Dec. 20 and found them dead.
The couple died from multiple gunshot wounds.
The Harmons had been married for more than 30 years, were well-liked and took care of their nephews and nieces, according to Kenneth Harmon, who is Wendell Harmon’s brother.
Wendell Harmon was working for the Pasadena Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services as a recreation leader at Jackie Robinson Park.
Family and friends honored the couple at a vigil held in front of their Altadena home last month.
The Harmons’ funeral Saturday has been postponed due to the fires, Kenneth Harmon said.
Johnson was being held at Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles.
