Former HMP Wandsworth Guard Sentenced to 15 Months Following Misconduct Scandal
A former prison officer at London’s HMP Wandsworth has been sentenced to 15 months in jail after admitting to having sexual relations with an inmate in an incident that was filmed and went viral on social media. Linda De Sousa Abreu, 30, of Fulham, received her sentence at Isleworth Crown Court on January 6, marking a dramatic fall from her position of authority.
The incidents
Judge Martin Edmunds KC, the Recorder of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, detailed multiple sexual encounters between Abreu and the prisoner. One incident was captured on an unauthorized phone by another inmate, who provided running commentary during the four-and-a-half-minute recording, declaring, “Guys we made history” and “This is how we live at Wandsworth bruv.”
In an ironic twist, Abreu accidentally recorded another sexual encounter on her prison-issued body camera, providing additional evidence of what the judge described as “repeated behavior” rather than an isolated incident.
Arrest and investigation
The scandal came to light after the video began circulating on social media, prompting an immediate investigation by prison authorities. Abreu was arrested at Heathrow Airport while attempting to board a flight to Madrid, suggesting a possible attempt to flee the jurisdiction.
Andrew Davy, the governor of HMP Wandsworth, submitted a damning statement to the court highlighting the broader implications of Abreu’s actions. He noted that female staff members have reported an increase in being “hit on” by inmates who now consider them “fair game.”
“The action of this defendant has undone years of positive and rewarding prisoner interactions in less than a day,” Davy wrote, emphasizing how the incident has undermined years of progress in establishing professional respect for female staff in the male-dominated prison environment.
Official response
The Prison Service responded to the incident with a statement emphasizing their commitment to maintaining high standards: “While the overwhelming majority of Prison Service staff are hardworking and honest, we’re catching more of the small minority who break the rules by bolstering our Counter Corruption Unit and strengthening our vetting processes.”
Legal proceedings
During the court proceedings, Abreu’s defense attorney, Rajiv Menon KC, stated that his client accepted “full responsibility” for her actions. The guilty plea to misconduct in a public office came after the incidents in June, with sentencing reflecting the severity of the breach of trust.
The case has highlighted ongoing challenges in maintaining professional standards within the prison system and the impact of social media in exposing misconduct within secure facilities.
