Binghamton, NY – Dense fog and persistent rain showers are dominating southern New York today, with weather conditions expected to remain unsettled through New Year’s Day. A dense fog advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m., making early morning travel hazardous. Drivers are urged to use caution and keep headlights on during commutes.
According to the National Weather Service, highs today will soar to 54°F, about 20 degrees above average for late December. Rain showers will taper off briefly in the afternoon before returning this evening and overnight. New precipitation amounts are expected to remain under a quarter-inch today, with light southeast winds gusting up to 22 mph.
Monday will bring a brief break from the rain, with partly sunny skies and highs near 46°F. However, the respite will be short-lived as showers move back into the area by Monday night. On New Year’s Eve, temperatures will drop to 36°F, and rain showers will intensify, potentially mixing with snow by New Year’s Day.
Travelers planning to be on the road New Year’s Day should prepare for reduced visibility and slippery conditions as snow showers develop overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning. Highs on Wednesday are forecast to hover around 39°F, with snow continuing into Thursday.
The extended forecast suggests temperatures will return to seasonable levels by late week, with highs in the low 30s and overnight lows dipping into the teens. Residents are encouraged to monitor updates for any changes to the forecast as conditions evolve.
