Sacramento, CA – Travelers heading through the Sierra Nevada should prepare for hazardous road conditions as a winter weather advisory takes effect Wednesday night. The advisory runs from 10 p.m. tonight through noon Friday and warns of 5 to 10 inches of snow above 6,000 feet.
According to the National Weather Service, gusty winds up to 45 mph will accompany the snowfall, creating potential whiteout conditions. The heaviest snow is expected late tonight through early Thursday morning, with accumulations possibly reaching 15 inches in higher elevations. Drivers on Interstate 80 and Highway 50 should exercise caution, as slippery roads and reduced visibility could lead to significant delays.
Rain will also affect lower elevations, including Sacramento, where a 60% chance of showers is expected tonight. Thursday and Friday bring more rain, with highs in the mid-50s. Calm winds and steady rain may limit visibility for commuters, and flooding in poorly drained areas cannot be ruled out.
Post-Christmas travel plans could be disrupted through the weekend. Those traveling in the Sierra are urged to carry chains, check road conditions at quickmap.dot.ca.gov, and allow extra travel time. The advisory highlights potential impacts on holiday traffic and outdoor plans.
Looking ahead, Sacramento will see rain persist into Saturday before clearing Sunday with highs near 60 degrees. While snow will taper off in higher elevations by Friday evening, icy conditions may linger into Saturday morning.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service and stay prepared for changing weather.
