Memphis, TN – Heavy rainfall and storms are set to sweep through the Memphis area starting Thursday, potentially disrupting post-Christmas plans. Rainfall totals may exceed 3 inches by Saturday morning, prompting concerns over localized flooding.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, light rain will persist through Christmas night, but heavier rainfall is expected to begin Thursday evening. A second wave of significant precipitation is anticipated Friday night into early Saturday, bringing a 20–30% chance of exceeding 3 inches in parts of the Mississippi Delta.

Travelers along major routes, including I-40 and I-55, should exercise caution as visibility and road conditions are likely to deteriorate. Officials recommend allowing extra time for travel and avoiding low-lying areas prone to flooding.

Thursday’s forecast includes a high of 57°F with cloudy skies and scattered showers. By Thursday night, rain will intensify, accompanied by gusts of up to 25 mph. Friday will remain wet, with thunderstorms possible by evening. Highs will reach the mid-60s, followed by cooler, drier air moving in late Saturday.

Looking ahead, sunny skies are expected by Sunday, offering a reprieve from the wet weather. Temperatures will hover around 62°F, ideal for post-holiday activities.

Residents should monitor updates from local authorities and prepare for potential weather-related delays.
