Post-Christmas Weather Alert for Nevada: Winter Storm Advisory for Sierra Roads Through Friday

Reno, NV – A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Nevada’s Sierra region starting Wednesday at 10 p.m. through Friday at noon. Snow accumulation and gusty winds could create hazardous travel conditions for holiday travelers in affected areas, including Lassen, Plumas, and Mono Counties.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), snowfall is expected to range from 2 to 10 inches, with higher elevations seeing up to 15 inches. Gusts could reach 90 mph along ridges and 50 mph in valleys, making driving on I-80 and U.S. 50 particularly dangerous. Drivers should prepare for delays, pack emergency supplies, and consider alternate routes.

Thursday’s forecast predicts a mix of rain and snow below 6,600 feet and snow above that elevation during the day. Conditions are expected to intensify Thursday night, with additional snow accumulation and strong winds. Friday will see continued snowfall at higher elevations before tapering off by midday.

The extended forecast for Reno suggests rain at lower elevations into the weekend. Saturday brings a slight chance of rain with highs near 54 degrees, while Sunday is likely to see additional rain and colder temperatures, with lows dipping into the 30s.

Residents and travelers are advised to check road conditions before heading out, as chain requirements and road closures may occur. Stay updated through NWS alerts and local news outlets.
