Albuquerque, NM – Christmas Day starts off with a mix of calm weather and dense fog in parts of eastern New Mexico, creating hazardous driving conditions for holiday travelers. Drivers along I-40 and nearby routes are urged to reduce speed and use low-beam headlights while visibility remains low this morning.

According to the National Weather Service, fog will clear by mid-afternoon as temperatures rise to 52°F under mostly sunny skies. However, a significant weather shift is expected late Thursday into Friday, with increasing cloud cover and a 20% chance of snow after midnight. Travelers should prepare for icy road conditions, especially in higher elevations near the Sandia Mountains and eastern plains.

Thursday will see highs near 54°F before a cold front brings overnight lows of 28°F and a slight chance of rain transitioning to snow. By Friday, cooler air will persist, with partly sunny skies and highs in the mid-40s.

Looking ahead, Saturday and Sunday are forecast to be mostly sunny with highs reaching 60°F. While conditions appear ideal for post-Christmas activities, those traveling Thursday night into Friday morning should stay informed of developing weather alerts.

The National Weather Service advises travelers to monitor updates and pack emergency supplies for potential delays. Snow accumulations are expected to remain light, but icy roads could impact commutes.

Stay tuned for weather updates as we approach the weekend.
