Pendleton, OR – A powerful winter storm will bring heavy snow to the Eastern Washington Cascades, starting Christmas afternoon and continuing through Thursday night. Travel in the region, especially above 3,000 feet, is expected to become treacherous as the storm intensifies.

According to the National Weather Service, snow accumulation will range from 6 to 18 inches in higher elevations, with areas like Easton, Roslyn, and Cle Elum heavily impacted. The warning extends from Wednesday at 1 p.m. to Thursday at 10 p.m. Travelers are urged to avoid mountain routes if possible and prepare for dangerous conditions, including low visibility and slippery roads.

Forecasters warn that additional snow accumulation may occur on Friday as colder air remains over the region. Those traveling along Interstate 90 or near the Cascades Crest should carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and a flashlight. Check current road conditions at WSDOT’s travel site before departing.

Five-Day Forecast for Eastern Washington:

Thursday: Heavy snow likely, highs near 30°F. Travel delays expected.

Friday: Snow showers taper off; icy roads remain a hazard. High of 32°F.

Saturday: Clear skies with lingering cold. Highs around 35°F.

Sunday: Partly cloudy, warming slightly to 38°F.

Monday: Mild and sunny. Highs near 40°F.

Prepare now for limited travel options and hazardous conditions through the weekend. Stay tuned for further updates as the storm progresses.
