Newport, NC – Rain is set to drench much of coastal North Carolina today, creating soggy conditions for Christmas Eve plans. Morning showers will continue throughout the day, tapering off by tonight.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Newport/Morehead City, rain chances peak at 80% today, with new precipitation expected between a quarter and half an inch. High temperatures will reach 48°F, but north winds at 5-9 mph will make it feel cooler. Motorists, particularly along US-17, should allow extra travel time due to wet roads and reduced visibility.
Tonight, rain chances diminish to 30%, with clearing skies after 8 p.m. Expect overnight lows near 35°F, with winds shifting north at 6-8 mph.
Christmas Day will bring a welcome break from the rain, featuring sunny skies and a high of 54°F. Winds could gust up to 20 mph, but the dry conditions will create a perfect backdrop for holiday festivities.
Looking ahead, temperatures will rise steadily, reaching 68°F by Saturday. While the end of the week remains mostly sunny, isolated rain chances return late Saturday and into Sunday.
Residents are encouraged to stay updated with the latest forecasts and exercise caution during rain-soaked commutes. Check for real-time updates from the NWS to stay prepared for any changes in weather patterns.
