Melbourne, FL — A high risk of life-threatening rip currents continues along Central Florida beaches this Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, creating dangerous conditions for swimmers and boaters. The National Weather Service in Melbourne has issued a warning for all Atlantic-facing beaches, including Daytona Beach, Cocoa Beach, and Melbourne Beach. Residents and visitors are urged to stay out of the water as rough surf and strong currents persist through Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service, rough surf and moderate winds will generate rip currents near piers and jetties. Visibility is also reduced inland by patchy fog, which is expected to linger until late Tuesday morning, especially along major roadways such as I-95 and U.S. Route 1. Drivers are advised to exercise caution and use headlights when navigating low-visibility conditions.
The extended forecast for Central Florida shows improving conditions after Wednesday, with mostly sunny skies and highs in the mid-70s. Christmas Day will be partly cloudy, with a 20% chance of isolated showers in the afternoon. Winds will remain light, but caution is advised near coastal areas due to lingering rip currents.
By Thursday, rain chances will increase to 40%, with scattered showers expected through Saturday. Temperatures will range from lows in the mid-60s to highs in the upper 70s, creating pleasant but slightly unsettled conditions for holiday travelers.
Beachgoers and mariners should monitor weather updates and heed advisories for their safety. Always swim near lifeguard-protected areas and avoid entering rough surf alone.
