We Would Be Lying if We Say This Colorado Lake Isn’t the Most Surreal Spot You’ll Ever See

A serene destination that is straight out of a fairy tale

Colorado is second to none when it comes to enchanting natural wonders. For instance, you can find a beautiful spot right in the heart of Colorado’s Glenwood Canyon. It is known for its emerald-green waters and cascading waterfalls, and will delight any seasoned hiker or casual traveler.

Get ready to experience something extraordinary when you visit this hidden gem today. Don’t believe us? Keep scrolling.

A true natural wonder

Hanging Lake is famous for its crystal-clear, aquamarine waters and fragile ecosystem. It’s almost too beautiful for words, right? The lake’s vibrant color comes from carbonate minerals dissolved in the water.

What makes this location truly unique is its ‘hanging’ position

From the name itself, the natural wonder appears to be perched on the edge of a cliff. It is also surrounded by lush greenery and awe-inspiring waterfalls that seem to transport visitors to another world.

The journey to Hanging Lake

Getting to Hanging Lake is a rewarding adventure, but that’s not to say it is without difficulty. The trailhead is located off I-70 in Glenwood Springs, and you’ll have to complete a 1.2-mile steep climb, gaining about 1,000 feet in elevation. It’s challenging but manageable, with rocky paths and well-maintained trails leading to the lake.

Note that as of writing, the Hanging Lake Trail has been temporarily closed so the authorities can work on bridge replacements. Be sure to check out the official website for the reopening dates.

Quite a surprising discovery

To this day, it’s still a mystery how people came to discover Hanging Lake. There are some stories of a man searching for gold in Glenwood Canyon. Apparently, he stumbled upon a dead horse near the opening of a gulch, and when he followed it, he came upon the beautiful scenery. The turquoise waters and the bowl-like basin hanging on the cliffs came into view, and the rest is history.

This rare treasure has restricted access for preservation

Hanging Lake is a protected area, meaning access is limited to preserve its delicate environment. Visitors must purchase a permit to hike the trail. It costs $12 per person during the summer season, but you can purchase it cheaper for $10 per person in the winter season.

A trail as scenic as the destination itself

What exactly can you expect from the Hanging Lake adventure? Think beautiful, rugged, and rocky. You will love the lush greenery, babbling brooks, towering cliffs, and more. It’s safe to say that the journey is as rewarding as the final view.

Admire its beauty without disturbing the fragile ecosystem

The journey will surely be unforgettable, and you are going to love how there are so many perfect vantage points for photography. Just take it slow, soak in the views, and appreciate the serenity.

While visiting, keep an eye out for wildlife

You might spot mule deer, squirrels, and a variety of birds along the trail. Remember to respect their space—this area is their home, after all.

The best place to unplug

One of the things visitors usually confirm is if there is cellular service at Hanging Lake. There’s none, but it will be fully staffed during the peak season and you’ll be safe.

The best times to visit are spring and early summer when the waterfalls are at their peak

You will surely enjoy your time at Hanging Lake during summer or spring. Do note though that Autumn also offers cooler weather and vibrant fall foliage, while winter visits are possible but require extra caution due to icy trails.

This is one of the things you’ll only find in Colorado and nowhere else.

Hanging Lake’s unmatched beauty is something worth seeing in real life

The trail and Hanging Lake’s picture-perfect views are all you need to identify that this is a worthwhile journey. We’d be lying if we say that this isn’t the most surreal spot you’ll ever see.

The state isn’t just one big ski resort, after all. That’s one of the things you should never say to someone from Colorado.
