Des Moines, IA – Snow and cold conditions are set to disrupt travel across southern Iowa this evening, with some areas expected to see up to three inches of snowfall. Drivers should remain vigilant on Interstate 80 and surrounding roads as low visibility and blowing snow create hazardous conditions.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Des Moines, intermittent snowfall will taper off around midnight, with strong northerly winds potentially leading to snow. Visibility could drop to a quarter mile in heavy blazes, especially in areas south of I-80. Travelers are urged to be prepared for slippery roads and allow extra time for travel.
By Monday morning, temperatures are expected to drop into the single digits, with wind chill feeling as low as -5°F. Monday will be sunny but cold, with a high near 20°F. Light north-westerly winds will calm down by evening, providing some respite from today’s strong winds.
The extended forecast calls for partly cloudy skies with a high near 20°F on Tuesday, followed by sunshine on Wednesday with temperatures reaching 21°F. Temperatures will warm up a bit over the weekend, reaching near 30°F by Friday.
Residents should prepare for possible delays tonight and into Monday morning. It is advisable to carry a winter survival kit, avoid unnecessary travel and monitor updated forecasts.
