Garrett County, MD – A significant winter storm is set to impact western areas of Maryland beginning late Sunday evening, with up to 18 inches of snowfall expected in some areas. Residents are urged to prepare for hazardous road conditions and possible travel delays.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a winter storm warning will be in effect from 10 p.m. Sunday until 6 a.m. Tuesday. The heaviest snowfall is expected between midnight and early Monday morning, at rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour. In addition to snow, freezing rain and sleet could pose additional threats Monday afternoon.
Travelers should avoid non-essential trips during the storm, as untreated roads will quickly become impassable. Even major routes including US 219 and I-68 may experience closures or delays. Officials recommend keeping an emergency kit including food, water and a flashlight in vehicles in case of unexpected delays.
A second wave of heavy snowfall is expected on Monday evening, creating further challenges for traffic on Monday evening. People with essential travel plans should check local road conditions through 511 and leave enough time to reach their destination.
The five-day forecast shows the storm will subside by Tuesday morning, followed by cooler temperatures through Wednesday. Highs are expected to be below zero in Garrett County, making icy conditions likely to persist.
