Weather Alert: High impact winter storm

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – A winter storm will have ice, snow, and near blizzard conditions for the state later today and Sunday. A Storm Team 12 Weather Alert continues through Sunday evening and travel this weekend will be dangerous for many. Please avoid travel Saturday night and Sunday, if at all possible, as slick conditions will be a concern on most Kansas roads. Ice accumulations of .25-.50″ are possible in central and south central Kansas. Heavy snow is likely in central and northern Kansas.

Today will have freezing drizzle concerns for most of Kansas, and will last through the afternoon and evening. Slick roads and numerous accidents are being reported in and around Wichita this morning. Roads may be wet late Saturday afternoon/evening as temperatures rise just above freezing, but icy concerns return for late tonight and early Sunday morning as colder air takes over.

Sunday morning will have the changeover to all snow for most of the state. Some of it will be heavy at times, and with north winds gusting to near 40 mph, significant blowing snow will reduce visibility in many areas. Areas along I-70 could receive a foot or more of snow, which farther south (including Wichita), a total of 3-6 inches look more likely.

The winter storm should be winding down Sunday night around 7pm, but wind chills falling -10 to -15 look likely heading into early Monday.

Please use extreme caution this weekend and be prepared for potential power interruptions with the ice and wind threat Kansas is facing.
