WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – A Storm Team 12 Weather Alert continues for blizzard conditions today. Many areas have already had icy weather that’s created very slick roads, but conditions will worsen into the afternoon. Ice accumulations up to half an inch have created treacherous travel conditions, and travel is strongly discouraged today unless absolutely necessary.
The snow will also be increasing throughout the region this morning. Heavy snow, in combination of wind gusts between 40 and 50 mph will lead to significant blowing snow and visibility that could be near zero at times. Some of the worst driving conditions will be experienced through about 3pm, and then the snow will taper from west to east. It should all be over (the snowfall anyway) by 6 pm.
Heaviest snow will fall in central and northern Kansas, and areas from Hays to Kansas City will easily get close to a foot of snow or more. Expect up to half a foot of accumulation in the Wichita area. Major drifting is likely given the wind forecast, and it’s not expected to ease up until Sunday night.
Be prepared for Arctic air too. Lows will fall to near zero Sunday night with wind chills as cold as -20 possible.
Travel conditions will be much better on Monday with light winds and a return of sunshine.
