Fairfield, IL – A winter storm warning remains in effect for parts of southern Illinois and southwestern Indiana through Monday afternoon, with freezing rain and snow creating hazardous conditions. Significant snow accumulations and high winds may cause widespread power outages and dangerous road conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, KY, the storm will bring a mix of sleet and freezing rain, followed by snow late tonight through Monday morning. Areas could get 1 to 3 inches of snow and up to a quarter inch of ice accumulation. Winds up to 30 miles per hour are expected to make conditions even more complicated.
Residents are advised to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. If driving is unavoidable, keep an emergency kit in your vehicle, including food, water, and a flashlight. Local officials have warned that snow-covered roads and low visibility could make travel nearly impossible, especially on rural routes.
An arctic blast following the storm will drop wind chill values into the single digits or below zero throughout the week. Residents without power are urged to seek warm shelter immediately to avoid prolonged exposure.
To stay safe, avoid downed power lines, monitor local weather updates and report outages to utility companies. For the latest road conditions, visit www.weather.gov/pah/roads,
Prepare now by charging devices, gathering supplies, and securing outdoor items. Officials remind residents to check on neighbors, especially those who are elderly or without heat.
