Snow and Ice Expected Across Oklahoma and Texas Panhandle: Winter Weather Advisory in Effect

The Country Herald is a community news platform for Kankakee, Iroquois and Will Counties. Covering breaking local news, sports, lifestyle and events.

AMARILLO, TX – Residents in the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles should prepare for dangerous winter conditions today as snow and ice are expected to impact travel and outdoor activities. A winter weather advisory remains in effect until noon CST, with mixed precipitation, slick roads and gusty winds up to 45 mph expected.

Up to 2 inches of snowfall is expected, with freezing drizzle creating icy surfaces before turning to ice in some areas, according to the National Weather Service. Blowing snow may reduce visibility, especially on major roads like U.S. Route 287 and Interstate 40.

Drivers are urged to slow down and use caution on bridges and overpasses, where there is a risk of ice accumulation. Local officials recommend checking road conditions before traveling by calling 800-452-9292 in Texas or 844-465-4997 in Oklahoma.

Looking ahead, temperatures will remain below zero through Monday, with lows falling into the teens. The wind chill value can make it feel close to zero. Conditions will begin to improve Monday afternoon as the storm system moves east.

If going outside, be sure to wear warm clothing and use caution on sidewalks and driveways to avoid slips and falls. For those planning activities this week, expect a mix of sunny skies and high temperatures in the 40s by mid-week.
