LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – Clouds continue to stream in this evening ahead of our Sunday winter storm. Morning lows drop into the 20s despite cloud cover.
Sunday is a WAVE Weather ALERT DAY as a significant winter storm brings a wintry mix (ice) and snow to our area. After starting out with snow Sunday morning, precipitation will change over to a wintry mix or freezing rain near and south of I-64.
The ALERT DAY continues Sunday night. Our current forecast calls for over 1/2 inch of ice accretion and 4 to 8 inches of snow for the Louisville Metro. Travel will become difficult if not impossible Sunday evening.
As the system pushes east Monday, any lingering wintry mix will change over to all snow. Travel will remain difficult if not impossible into the day on Monday. Power outages may also be possible depending how much icing occurs.
A few areas between I-64 and the Kentucky Parkways could see over a half inch of ice which may lead to power outages. The highest snowfall totals of 8 to 12 inches are expected across our far northern counties in Indiana.
Those of you south of the Kentucky Parkways will see lighter amounts of snow and ice and could even transition to just a cold rain Sunday evening. Dangerous cold becomes the storyline later into the workweek with another impactful winter weather system possible by Friday.
