EUREKA, CA – Coastal visitors and residents are urged to exercise caution as a moderate sneaker wave warning is in effect Monday and Tuesday. The National Weather Service has issued this advisory for the Northwest California coast, warning of dangerous waves that can appear unexpectedly and sweep people out to sea.
According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, the advisory is in place from 9 a.m. Monday through 9 p.m. Tuesday. These waves can arise suddenly after the sea remains calm for a long time. Beachgoers are advised to avoid climbing steep beaches, gorges and cliffs. Those driving on US Highway 101 are encouraged to monitor changing conditions along the coast and follow posted warnings.
Temperatures are expected to remain mild in Eureka this week, with a high reaching 57 degrees Fahrenheit on Monday and falling to 41 degrees Fahrenheit at night. Tuesday will be partly sunny with a high near 59°F. The weather will remain clear through the middle of the week, with sunny skies and temperatures climbing to 61°F on Wednesday. By Thursday and Friday, Eureka will experience cooler conditions, with highs in the upper 50s.
Residents should remain vigilant during the advisory period and avoid facing the ocean. While risks diminish by mid-week, the unpredictable nature of the ocean underlines the importance of remaining vigilant near the coast.
