BLACKSBURG, VA – A winter storm warning remains in effect for parts of North Carolina and central Virginia until 7 p.m. Monday, as a powerful storm brings a mix of ice, sleet and snow to the area. Travel is expected to become hazardous until Monday evening, with significant impacts on power and road routes.
The National Weather Service reports that snow and sleet accumulations could reach up to 4 inches, with snow layers up to half an inch thick in some areas. Wind speeds of up to 35 mph are also expected, increasing the possibility of downed trees and power lines. Travelers on I-81, I-77 and local highways should prepare for slick roads and possible closures due to fallen debris.
Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve. For those who must be on the road, officials recommend carrying an emergency kit with a flashlight, food and water. According to Duke Energy, thousands of people may lose power during the storm and restoration efforts may be delayed due to icy conditions.
It is expected that the impact of the storm will subside on Monday night as temperatures will start rising slightly. However, icy patches may continue to impact travel through Tuesday morning.
Officials stress the importance of immediately reporting downed power lines and remind residents to avoid touching or moving them. Keep mobile devices charged and follow local emergency alerts for updates.
