Omaha, NE – A powerful winter storm will bring blizzard conditions to southeast Nebraska on Sunday, prompting immediate travel warnings.
The National Weather Service has placed Jefferson, Gage, Pawnee and Richardson counties under a blizzard warning from 3 a.m. to midnight Sunday. Heavy snowfall of 8 to 13 inches, coupled with wind gusts up to 35 mph, will create dangerous whiteout conditions.
The storm, which is already producing freezing drizzle, will turn into heavy snowfall overnight. According to the NWS, travel will be nearly impossible due to blowing snow and low visibility. Residents are advised to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.
Local officials have warned of power outages and dangerous roads due to snow and ice accumulation. Temperatures will drop Sunday night, with wind chills reaching -20°F by Monday morning.
The Nebraska State Patrol encourages residents to prepare emergency kits with food, water and a flashlight. When stranded, drivers should remain in their vehicles for safety.
