Garrett County, MD – A major winter storm is set to engulf western areas of Maryland, with snowfall rates sometimes reaching 3 inches per hour. Residents are urged to prepare for hazardous travel conditions and widespread disruptions.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a winter storm warning will be in effect from 10 p.m. Sunday until 6 a.m. Tuesday. The storm is expected to bring heavy snowfall late tonight and into Monday morning, bringing up to 18 inches of snowfall in the higher reaches of the Potomac Highlands.
Road conditions will deteriorate rapidly, especially during intense snowfall. Untreated roads may become impassable, including major routes such as US 219 and I-68. Officials advise against non-essential travel. Those who must drive should equip their vehicles with emergency supplies, including water, food and flashlights.
After a slight reduction in rainfall on Monday afternoon, a second wave of heavy snowfall is expected on Monday evening, further complicating travel and cleanup efforts. Freezing rain and sleet may also mix with the snow during the day, increasing the risk of freezing.
The storm will subside early Tuesday, but freezing temperatures are expected to persist, causing icy conditions on untreated roads and sidewalks through the middle of the week.
