What’s New
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene issued a weather warning ahead of the certification of Donald Trump’s election victory, citing the winter storm about to hit Washington D.C.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Greene stated, “Washington has a winter storm warning for Jan 5-7th expecting possibly a foot of snow.”
She said some of her colleagues had left the city because of the storm, but she pledged to walk to the Capitol if necessary for the congressional certification of Trump’s election, which is due to happen on Monday.
Newsweek has contacted Greene’s office via email for comment.
Why It Matters
The weather warning coincides with the certification of Trump’s election by Congress, scheduled for Monday. Greene suggested the weather might disrupt representatives traveling back to the Capitol after leaving for the weekend.
Despite the weather risk, this year’s certification is expected to be more of a routine affair than it was for President Joe Biden four years ago, when a mob of Trump’s supporters attacked the Capitol to try tocoverturn Biden’s victory.
What To Know
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Washington D.C., heavy snow and sleet accumulations between Sunday and Tuesday.
The warning comes as the same time as storm and blizzard warnings are in place for fifteen states as a powerful polar vortex is set to drop temperatures nationwide this week.
The heaviest snowfall in Washington D.C. is expected overnight Sunday into Monday morning, potentially causing hazardous conditions for commuters.
Greene wrote on X Saturday night that many members of Congress had left the area despite allegedly being warned to remain in town. The post was viewed over 722,000 times by Sunday morning.
The certification of the election by Congress is a constitutional requirement; it is the final step in reaffirming the official election by the Electoral College in December.
Trump is set to hold a “victory rally” at the Capital One Arena on January 19, the eve of his inauguration on January 20.
