The Country Herald is a community news platform for Kankakee, Iroquois and Will Counties. Covering breaking local news, sports, lifestyle and events.

LITTLE ROCK, AR – Severe storms are expected to move across Southeast Arkansas this afternoon, bringing the potential for damaging winds, hail and tornadoes. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an increased risk warning for areas of the I-40 corridor, including Little Rock, Pine Bluff and Texarkana.

According to the NWS, the most intense storm is predicted between 12 pm and 8 pm Sunday. Wind gusts can reach 80 mph, and hail up to golf-ball size is possible. A few tornadoes may also develop. Residents are urged to protect outdoor items, avoid travel if possible and keep an eye on local weather alerts.

As soon as the storm subsides on Sunday evening, the cold will increase in the area. The minimum temperature is expected to drop to 20 degrees Celsius at night, with wind chill making it even colder. Freezing rain may fall across northern Arkansas on Monday morning, creating hazardous travel conditions, especially on bridges and overpasses.

The sky will be clear on Monday but the temperature will be cold. Highs will only reach the upper 30s, and a strong north wind will keep wind chills near freezing. Hikers and hikers are advised to be prepared for icy conditions during the morning hours.

The five-day forecast indicates calm weather through the middle of the week, with sunshine and daytime highs in the mid-30s. However, another storm system may arrive by Thursday, potentially bringing rain or snow.
