KNOXVILLE, TN – East Tennessee is under a winter weather advisory until 7 p.m. Sunday, as snow and ice make travel hazardous across the region. Drivers are urged to use caution as up to an inch of snow and light ice accumulations are expected throughout the day.
The National Weather Service reports icy conditions began developing Sunday morning. Roads are already bad in Knox, Jefferson and Sullivan counties, including major routes like I-40 and I-75. Black ice especially increases the danger on bridges and overpasses. Commuters are advised to travel slowly and be prepared for extended travel times.
It is expected that the snowfall will reduce by evening, but the temperature will remain below zero overnight, making it difficult to drive on the roads till Monday morning. Officials recommend avoiding unnecessary travel and checking local road conditions through Tennessee’s 511 system before heading out.
The five-day forecast calls for a warming trend starting Monday afternoon, with highs reaching the mid-40s by Wednesday. However, another cold front could deliver light snowfall on Friday, creating additional concerns for the weekend.
Emergency kits are encouraged for those evacuating, including blankets, water and non-perishable food. Residents are also reminded to check on elderly neighbors and make sure pets are protected from the cold.
