Madison, WI – Authorities are investigating the death of an officer after an incident Monday night on Madison’s west side.
Police responded to the Best Western on Anamark Drive at approximately 8:22 p.m. following a report of a vehicle theft. Officers encountered a subject, described as an adult male, who was walking on foot and pursued him. He was captured and taken into custody, with emergency responders performing medical evaluation on scene.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ), the man became unresponsive after being transported to the Dane County Jail. Despite being taken to the nearest hospital, he was declared dead on Tuesday. No weapon was discharged during the incident.
In accordance with department policy, the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave. DOJ’s Division of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is leading the case in collaboration with local agencies and a crime response specialist.
Officials stressed that the investigation is ongoing. The findings will be forwarded to the Dane County District Attorney.
