Wichita, KS – A major winter storm is set to impact central and northeastern Kansas this weekend, bringing freezing rain, snow and dangerously low wind chills.
The storm will begin with freezing drizzle early Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in Wichita. Precipitation will intensify Saturday evening, turning into a mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow. Areas along Highway 400 and Interstate 70 are expected to see the heaviest accumulations, with snow totals reaching 16 inches in some locations.
Blizzard conditions may develop late Saturday night into Sunday due to high winds and blowing snow. A steep drop in temperatures is expected, with wind chills between -5°F and -15°F Monday morning. Hazardous travel is possible throughout the weekend, especially north of Highway 400.
Local officials are urging residents to be prepared for power outages and avoid unnecessary travel. Updated forecasts will be available by 5 a.m. Saturday.
