Springfield, IL – A significant winter storm is set to impact central Illinois beginning at midnight Saturday, with heavy snow, high winds and freezing rain expected to create hazardous conditions through Monday afternoon.
A winter storm warning is in effect for much of the area, including cities like Springfield, Champaign, Decatur and Effingham, according to the National Weather Service in Lincoln. More than 5 inches of snow accumulation is expected across the region, with a total of 8 to 12 inches possible along a line extending from Beardstown to Paris and further south. Areas south of Interstate 70 may also see sleet and light freezing rain, resulting in up to 0.2 inches of snow accumulation.
Travel conditions will likely become hazardous, especially during Monday morning commutes. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for possible power outages due to the intensity of the storm. Those who must travel should carry an emergency kit with essentials like a flashlight, food and water.
The storm is expected to peak on Sunday afternoon, reducing visibility to near zero in areas. For updates on road conditions, visit here traveling around illinois,
