WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – A Storm Team 12 Weather Alert continues for heavy ice and blizzard conditions that will ramp through Sunday afternoon. Many areas have already had icy weather that’s created very slick roads, but conditions will worsen overnight and Sunday morning. Ice accumulations will remain highest in central, south central and eastern Kansas, where as much as .50″ is possible. The wind will also increase in the overnight and Sunday morning hours, which could lead to power outages.
The snow will also be increasing throughout the region Sunday morning. Heavy snow, in combination of wind gusts of greater than 35 mph will lead to significant blowing snow and visibility that could be near zero at times. Some of the worst driving conditions possible will be experienced Sunday morning through about 3pm, and then snow will taper from west to east. It should all be over (the snowfall anyway) by 7pm.
Heaviest snow will fall in central and northern Kansas, and areas from Hays to Kansas City will easily get close to a foot of snow or more. Major drifting is likely given the wind forecast, and it’s not expected to ease up until Sunday night.
Be prepared for Arctic air too. Lows will fall to near zero Sunday night with wind chills as cold as -15 possible.
Travel conditions will be much better on Monday with light winds and a return of sunshine.
