RICHMOND, VA – Governor Glenn Youngkin declared a state of emergency Friday ahead of a significant winter storm approaching Virginia. The storm, which begins Sunday, could bring snow, freezing rain and hazardous travel conditions across the state.
The National Weather Service predicts snowfall and ice accumulations, with the greatest impacts from Sunday afternoon through Monday. The temperature may remain well below zero till next week, which will further increase the challenges.
According to state officials, crews are pre-treating roads while additional emergency personnel are on standby. The Virginia Department of Transportation urged travelers to adjust plans and avoid non-essential travel. For real-time updates, residents can use the 511 Virginia mobile app.
Governor Youngkin advised residents to stock up on essential supplies and keep an eye on weather alerts. He encouraged everyone to stay off the roads during the storm, saying, “Safety is the top priority.”
Residents should prepare vehicles with emergency kits including blankets, water and flashlights. Officials also warned against using gas-powered appliances indoors due to carbon monoxide risks.
