LINCOLN, NE – A winter storm warning has been issued for parts of southeast Nebraska and southwest Iowa, with heavy snow expected this weekend. The storm is forecast to begin on Saturday afternoon and intensify by Sunday night. Total snowfall could range from 5 to 14 inches, along with snow and winds up to 35 mph.

According to the National Weather Service, the warning is in effect from Saturday afternoon to midnight Sunday. The heaviest snowfall is expected from Saturday night to Sunday morning. Hazardous conditions will make travel very difficult, especially on major routes like Interstate 80.

Residents are urged to avoid travel if possible. For people who must be on the streets, officials recommend carrying emergency supplies, including a flashlight, food and water. Road condition updates are available by calling 511.

Sunday’s high temperature will be near 15 degrees, with winds up to 26 mph, with a low near zero. Conditions will improve on Monday, but temperatures will remain cool and partly sunny with a high near 16 degrees.

The storm is the first significant winter weather event of 2025, impacting cities like Lincoln, Nebraska City and Beatrice, as well as communities like Shenandoah and Clarinda in southwest Iowa. Residents should prepare for power outages and monitor local weather updates throughout the weekend.
