SPARTANBURG, SC – Residents in Spartanburg and surrounding areas are bracing for icy conditions as a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Sunday afternoon through Monday. Freezing rain, with possible snow or hail, could create hazardous travel conditions and power outages. Snow accumulations of up to 0.25 inches are expected, which will primarily affect roads and trees in the area.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Greenville-Spartanburg office, precipitation is expected to begin Sunday afternoon, increasing overnight and into Monday morning. Hazardous driving conditions are expected on major routes including I-26. Motorists are urged to delay unnecessary travel, use extreme caution while driving and be prepared for prolonged power outages.
Highs on Sunday are expected to hover around 45 degrees Fahrenheit, dropping into the mid 30s by the evening as freezing rain begins to fall. Precipitation is expected to reduce by Monday afternoon, after which the sky will clear and the maximum temperature will reach 52 degrees Fahrenheit. Cool, sunny weather is expected to resume Tuesday, with high temperatures in the mid-40s.
Emergency management advises residents to secure outdoor items, charge electronic devices, and have emergency supplies ready. Black ice on untreated roads may remain a concern through Monday morning.
