LINCOLN, NE – A powerful winter storm is impacting southeast Nebraska and southwest Iowa, bringing significant snow accumulations, hazardous ice and below zero wind chills. The National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley has issued a Winter Storm Warning, effective until midnight Sunday.
Affected areas, including Lincoln, Beatrice, Nebraska City and Shenandoah, could see total snowfall totals of 5 to 13 inches, according to the NWS. Snow accumulations up to one-tenth of an inch are also expected, along with wind gusts up to 35 mph. These conditions will create hazardous travel, with some roads becoming impassable.
The storm is expected to remain strong throughout the weekend. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel. If travel is unavoidable, officials recommend carrying emergency supplies, including a flashlight, food and water.
The National Weather Service also warns of extreme cold air, which could make exposure dangerous. To check current road conditions, call 511 for the latest updates for your state.
