Hastings, NE – A powerful winter storm is expected to bring freezing rain, blowing snow and icy roads to Nebraska this weekend. The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for the area, cautioning residents about hazardous travel conditions, especially on Highway 6.
Freezing drizzle is expected to begin Saturday morning and snow is expected to progress Saturday night, according to the National Weather Service. Up to 0.1 inch of snow accumulation is possible during the day, causing slippery conditions on untreated roads. Through Sunday, heavy snowfall of between 2 and 13 inches is expected, with the heaviest snowfall expected in southeastern Nebraska.
Gusty winds between 25 and 35 mph will impair visibility and blowing snow, especially Sunday morning. Temperatures will be extremely cold Sunday night with wind chills dropping as low as -11°F. Travel is strongly discouraged during peak storm hours due to potential whiteout conditions.
By Monday, the weather will settle out with mostly sunny skies and highs around 15°F, although overnight lows will remain in the single digits.
Residents should prepare by stocking up on essential supplies and making sure vehicles are winter ready. Avoid unnecessary travel, and check local updates for road closures or changing conditions. For those who need to travel, make sure your vehicle is equipped with emergency supplies.
