RICHMOND, VA – A winter storm is expected to bring heavy snow, sleet and ice to Virginia through Sunday night. Hazardous conditions are expected to affect major roads, including I-95, through Monday.
According to the National Weather Service, a winter storm watch will be in effect from Sunday evening through late Monday night for central and northern Virginia, Maryland and West Virginia. Total snowfall of 5 inches or more is possible, with some areas receiving up to 10 inches. Accumulation of snow can make travel dangerous.
Residents are urged to prepare now by monitoring forecasts and limiting non-essential travel. Power outages are also a concern, as the combination of snow and freezing rain can cause tree branches to fall. Monday morning commute is likely to be severely affected.
On Sunday, clouds will increase as temperatures rise to 35°F. Snow is expected to start overnight, with the possibility of sleet and freezing rain on Monday. The snow may taper off by Monday afternoon, but slick roads and icy conditions may persist into Monday night.
The weather will remain calm for the rest of the week, with sunny skies on Tuesday and a high near 30°F. Nighttime lows will remain cool reaching into the teens.
Stay tuned for updates as the storm approaches and check road conditions before traveling.
