PORTLAND, OR – A winter weather advisory will be in effect for the Oregon and Washington Cascades through Sunday morning, with up to 15 inches of snow expected at higher elevations. Hikers and outdoor enthusiasts should be prepared for dangerous conditions.
According to the National Weather Service, snow levels are expected to drop to 4,000 feet Saturday afternoon, with the heaviest snowfall occurring overnight. Roads are expected to be slick and dangerous over mountain passes, including Government Camp and Santiam Pass. Drivers should carry chains, blankets and emergency supplies with them when visiting affected areas.
The advisory also impacts popular destinations like Mount St. Helens, Willamette Pass and Larch Mountain, where between 3 and 8 inches of snow accumulation is expected, with snow accumulations expected to exceed 5,000 feet. Snow may cause walking surfaces to become slippery, so hikers and residents in these areas are advised to take extra caution.
Snowfall will continue on Sunday morning but the snowfall will reduce by late morning. Drivers should check road conditions on Oregon’s TripCheck.com or Washington’s WSDOT site for updated travel information and series restrictions.
As the five-day forecast comes out, temperatures in Portland are expected to hover around 40, with intermittent rain showers continuing through the middle of the week. However, snowfall will continue in the mountains, making winter sports activities possible but potentially risky.
