BALTIMORE, MD – A significant winter storm is expected to bring heavy snow and ice to the Baltimore area through Sunday evening. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch in effect late Sunday through Monday night, warning of potentially hazardous travel conditions and widespread disruptions.
Snowfall amounts of 5 to 10 inches are expected, with locally higher amounts possible, according to the NWS. Freezing rain can cause accumulations of up to a quarter-inch of snow, making roads particularly dangerous. Winds up to 35 mph could occur, causing snowfall and reduced visibility.
Residents are advised to avoid non-essential travel from Sunday night, as the situation is expected to worsen by Monday morning. Those traveling on Monday are urged to be prepared for significant delays and slippery roads. Major roads such as I-95 and the Baltimore Beltway may see dangerous conditions.
There is also a possibility of power disruption in some areas due to snow accumulation and strong winds due to the storm. Officials recommend securing outdoor items and keeping emergency supplies on hand, including flashlights, batteries and extra blankets.
Temperatures are expected to remain near zero during the storm, with snowfall reducing from Monday night. The rest of the week looks clear, but cold temperatures will persist.
